Introduction to Base Oils on Monday 27th October
The manufacturing of lube base oils began almost a century ago using solvent separation technology, which still represents the majority of base oil volumes produced today. In recent decades, several strategies involving hydroprocessing technology have been used for base oil manufacturing. “Hybrid” plants that use both solvent and hydroprocessing technologies also exist.
The rise of different base oil manufacturing processes – and the different base oil types produced by each process – creates a difficult maze for refiners, marketers, and supply managers, especially those new to lubes. To further complicate the industry, most lube base oil plants are located in fuels refining complexes. Crude selection to maximize fuels profitability is often in conflict with crudes that are profitable for lube base oils.
Navigate the maze and join ICIS for a day of introductory base oil training, led by an industry consultant with over 25 years of experience in base oil refining, international crude selection, and global lube supply and demand. The course provides an overview of global lube-friendly crudes, interactions between refinery fuels and lube base oil units, and the manufacturing of API Group I, II, III, IV and V base oils. Information on global base oil supply, market demand segments, and the role of additives will complete the formal discussion.
